SACRAMENTO 01 “MAIN”

The Sacramento Central Office was a long distance repeating station and telephone switching office for local and long distance telephone traffic.

The Sacramento Central Office, located in Downtown Sacramento is a complex of two separate buildings; 1407 J Street and 1423 J Street. The 1407 building housed the local area telephone switching equipment, while the 1423 building housed the long distance switching equipment and microwave radio transmission and support equipment. Both buildings are located side by side and appear to be connect with one another.

The Sacramento Regional Center and Central Office was a major microwave switch point, with a total of two separate towers on the roof of both buildings. One tower had four antenna pairs facing the north and west, with a second tower having two antenna pairs facing south and east. The North-West tower supported links to Berryessa Peak (Junction), Pleasant Grove, Vaca Hills, and Wolf Creek. The South-East tower supported links to Elk Grove and Ben Bolt Ridge.

Status: Partially Demolished

Between 2012 and 2013, the North-West tower was removed from the building’s roof. As of 2019, the South-East tower still remains.
